Upgrading our all abilities gardening area

Gardening brings joy to many and we've always been aware of the limitations some people have in getting their hands dirty at our sprawling site. As you walk through the main gates there's an area with raised garden beds, first built in 2009.

The structures within the area were wearing out and it needed to be rebuilt to continue to be a viable area for people with a wide range of abilities.

As this is the first impression area of the site, we want it to be functional, productive and beautiful.

With funding from the A.L. Lane Foundation and the Fletcher Jones Family Foundations, we are rebuilding this area including work benches at various heights to allow for standing or sitting, and protecting the area from weather with a partial roof and walls.

The rebuild will use wicking beds to create the raised gardens, which will have a much longer life than the original timber structures which are now breaking down as well as being more water efficient.

Once area was demolished and the vision for the new area became clearer, we decided to shift the new construction about two metres further into the site.

By increasing the access and height of the structure, we hope this area will become a showpiece of the garden, greeting you proudly as you walk in.
