worms

One persons trash is another's treasure

We have several worm farms on site. Worms produce vermicast, which is their faeces and often referred to as 'castings'. This material can be added to garden beds or pots to enrich soil life. It is gold to gardeners.

Worms produce a beautiful liquid fertiliser often referred to as 'worm tea'. This liquid is a combination of worm 'wee' and leachate from the matter being broken down in the farm. This fertiliser can be watered down and applied to house and garden plants.

compost

We have several bays of compost running at any time. Food and garden waste is diverted from landfills and it reduces greenhouse gases from the methane produced, and from the manufacture and transport artificial fertilisers.

We use the end product around the garden, improving soil health, as compost: holds moisture (so saves water); improves drainage; buffers soils that are very acidic or alkaline (that is, reduces either way); helps suppress plant disease, by encouraging a healthy and complete ecosystem; provides all the nutrients plants need.

The chooks also help us to recycle nutrients across the site.

Our composting process

We use cold composting on site with a multi-bin system. We can stage the composting over time.

Everyone puts the vegetation into one of the bins. When it’s full, we move on to the next bin. The first bin has time to break down into wonderful finished compost. This makes the bin easier to maintain because you we have to struggle with separating the new vegetation from the finished compost (turning).

Join us and help manage the compost hub, learn or teach to compost.
